VEHICLE SECURITY ADVICE FOR BUSINESSES - CRIME PREVENTION

VEHICLE SECURITY ADVICE FOR BUSINESSES - CRIME PREVENTION

Do you operate a garage, vehicle dealership, car-hire company, taxi/private-hire business, delivery company or another business responsible for vehicles?

Vehicle security should form part of your everyday business security.

Consider the following:

🔑 Maintain strict control over vehicle keys and spare keys. Store them securely, locked away and out of sight when not in use.

👤 Limit access to keys and vehicles to authorised staff.

📋 Have clear procedures for issuing and returning vehicle keys.

🚘 Ensure vehicles are locked whenever unattended – including during loading, unloading or brief stops.

🔒 Consider appropriate physical security, alarms, immobilisers and tracking systems for your fleet.

📹 Review CCTV coverage, lighting, gates and access control around areas where vehicles are stored.

🪪 Vehicle-hire businesses should have robust procedures for verifying the identity and documentation of customers hiring vehicles.

⚠️ Encourage staff to report suspicious behaviour, unusual enquiries or anything that appears out of place.

Businesses should also regularly review their security arrangements rather than waiting until an incident has occurred.
